Our 2D National Saturday Club members kicked off their first term with a bang by delving into the world of Verre Églomisé, an exquisite heritage craft involving the gilding of 24-carat gold onto glass and etching intricate designs into the gilded surface.
Under the guidance of Woodcarving students Henry Brown and Fay Ryan, their workshops began with hands-on demonstrations by Henry, who showcased the delicate processes of degreasing glass and applying gold leaf. After degreasing their glass, our members applied a thin layer of gelatine adhesive to the glass, then carefully laid down 24-carat gold leaf using a gilding brush.
Our members set to work designing imagined beasts, then transferring their sketches onto the prepared glass panes. Using specialised gilding tools, the members brought their visions to life, etching their unique designs onto the gilded glass before sealing their masterpieces with a spray-painted finish. The results were stunning!
A huge congratulations to our members for completing this brilliant first project and for their demonstration of their creativity, dedication, and individuality. Here’s to many more inspired creations ahead!
