Develop your own artistic direction
Your artistic interests, research questions and ambitions are central to your MA experience. Rather than following a prescribed approach or house style, you’ll be supported to develop your own direction through experimentation, critical reflection and dialogue.
You’ll have the freedom to explore unfamiliar processes, challenge established methods and develop new relationships between materials, ideas and forms of presentation.
Learn from practising artists
You’ll be taught by practising artists and specialists whose professional experience informs their teaching. Individual tutorials, group critiques, seminars and workshops provide opportunities to test your ideas, receive constructive feedback and develop confidence in articulating your work.
You’ll also work alongside artists with diverse backgrounds and approaches, benefiting from peer discussion and a shared commitment to ambitious contemporary practice.
Access specialist facilities
Full-time students have allocated studio spaces at the Art School, providing a dedicated environment for sustained practice. Part-time students maintain their own studio base, with access to the Art School’s workshops and designated working spaces on allocated days during term time.
You’ll benefit from specialist workshops, technical expertise, exhibition spaces and library resources to support your research and experimentation.

MA Fine Art is part of the Graduate School, bringing together artists, carvers, conservators and researchers through a shared culture of critical enquiry and material understanding.
Cross-course seminars, research events and presentations provide opportunities to encounter different approaches to making, preserving and interpreting culture, encouraging dialogue beyond your own discipline.
Present your work publicly
You’ll work towards presenting a resolved body of work in the Art School’s MA Show, developing practical experience in selecting, installing and presenting your work to a public audience.
You’ll also participate in a final Critical Practice Event, providing an opportunity to communicate your research and reflect on the development of your practice.
Prepare for your future practice
Professional development is integrated throughout the MA, helping you consider how to sustain and develop your work after graduation.
You’ll explore different approaches to professional life, including exhibitions, residencies, commissions, public art, education, collaboration and further research. Teaching also addresses practical skills such as documentation, writing and digital presence, alongside broader questions about sustainability and professional practice
