COURSE OVERVIEW
This eight week course will offer you the opportunity to learn the fundamental approaches to traditional woodcarving in one of the few art schools that still teaches it. Ideal for beginners/intermediate carvers, we will introduce you to specific skills and techniques needed to produce a wood carving, how to work with wood and grain, and how to sharpen chisels safely. This is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself into a creative hands-on project and learn a bit more about this wonderful craft.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
We will begin the course with a brief introduction to the tradition of woodcarving. You will then be provided with a small cast relief model, inspired by Viking ornaments. I will take you through the processes of transferring the design on to wood, roughing out, setting levels, refining, and finishing.
The project will be small in size and carved in relief which stands out from the surface, rather than being set in. I will take you through the fundamentals of carving chisels and how to sharpen by hand. You will leave the course with knowledge of how to approach and execute your own simple carving project at home.
What’s included: all teaching, and your tools and materials for the woodcarving.
What you will need to bring: a steel tape measure, an A3 sketchbook, pencil, rubber and ruler. Please bring along any set squares or chisels you may have. Please wear old clothes you don’t mind spoiling, or bring an apron, and wear fully closed shoes at all times.
10% discount available for City & Guilds of London Art School undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation students and alumni, and staff. Contact eveningcourses@cityandguildsartschool.ac.uk to receive the discount code.

TESTIMONIALS
“I absolutely loved it, Jo was brilliant and let us all work at our own paces – would thoroughly recommend” Maria, Spring 2024 Evening Course
“I thoroughly enjoyed it and was very sorry when it finished. The facilities were first class, Jo Grogan, the tutor, was brilliant. She was very able and enthusiastic, always upbeat and encouraging. She was very happy to share her knowledge and expertise, give advice and make constructive suggestions. I really liked the ambience of the School and everyone (tutors, staff and fellow students) were all very friendly and welcoming. Everyone seemed to enjoy and be really proud of what they were doing. I loved it and wish it could have gone on longer.” Robert, Spring 2024 Evening Course
