CONSERVATION COURSES
Originally established after World War II to conserve and preserve London’s bomb-damaged architectural treasures, the Conservation Department has evolved over the last 75 years and runs a range of acclaimed conservation courses at BA (Hons), Graduate Diploma and MA level, with a very high success rate of graduates going directly into employment in the conservation sector.
Conservation of cultural objects is a complex, specialist area, that requires a deep understanding of science subjects and humanities, as well as craft and practice-based project management. From our long experience of teaching conservation and from expert industry feedback, we know that in order to gain the specialist knowledge, skills and experience you will need to forge a successful career as a conservator, you are best advised to study for the full three years this intensive BA (Hons) course offers you.
For individuals who have either already completed a BA (Hons) in Conservation or for those who have worked professionally in a related field such as Collections’ Management our MA course sets out to equip graduates to go on to become leaders in the field. It is particularly relevant for those planning to work on ambitious, or large-scale conservation projects as specialists or project leaders and for those intending to work as experts in International contexts. The MA focuses on tackling more complex advanced-level projects, at times involving collaboration with industry partners.
BA (HONS) CONSERVATION: BOOKS & PAPER
We were very excited to work with a number of leading conservation specialists at the Tate, National Archives, Fitzwilliam Museum and College of Arms, to prepare and launch our new BA award in books and paper conservation and we are most grateful for the support from the Foyle Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Steel Trust, Pilgrim Trust, Leche Trust and Headley Trust enabling us to redesign and fit out a whole new suite of Conservation studios and a new Conservation Lab in the Summer of 2020.
As part of a regular cycle of review we revalidated our long-established and successful BA (Hons) Conservation Studies programme and are now running it with new titles reflecting the expansion of the Conservation Department and our new subject area.
