COURSE OVERVIEW

By its very nature, a Still Life is temporary which lends it a feeling of urgency, but how to capture this moment in paint?

Working from a new still life each week and through various drawing and painting exercises, this course will help you to cease describing things in paint and to start expressing them.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

‘For our time is the passing of a shadow

And our lives will run like

Sparks through the stubble’

From Derek Jarman’s film Blue

Still Life painting is not a cold collection of inanimate objects, but if approached in the right way, can become a portal for the artist to express feelings, memory and hidden thoughts.

Each week a text, image or piece of music will provide inspiration for the evening’s work ahead. It could be a passage from Derek Jarman’s book ‘Modern Nature’ to Manet’s last small floral paintings to Joan Mitchell’s expressive abstract works.

During the course, your observational drawing skills will improve and as a consequence you will feel more comfortable to take risks in your mark making.

You will learn to take time to mix your colours before painting so you are then free to react quickly and instinctively to what is in front of you.

By the end of the course, you will have expanded your painterly language and have deepened your technical understanding of oil paint.

You will leave with an armful of expressive drawings and paintings and a head full of inspiration!

Serena has 30 years of experience painting with oils and is an encouraging and approachable tutor. She has had a wide range of education from atelier style training in Italy to a Postgraduate Masters in Drawing from the Royal Drawing School.

This course is not suitable for absolute beginners.
