Our 2D National Saturday Club members have been studying the heritage craft of medieval illumination.
Guided by tutor Sarah Davis, with assistance from students Alice Ridgeway (BA Carving) & Georgia McKenzie (BA Fine Art), they began by creating intricate miniature drawings, featuring designs from butterflies and peacocks, to cats and mythical beasts.
Next came gilding, where our members applied miniatum ink and real gold, using the heat of their breath to make their designs shimmer – a traditional technique used by medieval scribes.
Our members will now be painting their pieces using gouache and fine brushes to layer rich colours and add final touches, highlights, shadows and outlines, to complete their masterpieces.
